What to Wear

Yipee! You have booked your session with me and we are going to have a fabulous time!  Now you are wondering what in the world you are going to wear. Trying to figure out what you are going to wear for a photo session can be stressful. So here are my favorite tips on what you should wear for your session:

1. Select a color scheme!

The first thing I ask when someone seeks advice on colors to wear. Colors can totally complete your photos. I always encourage color! Skip the patterns in favor of solid colors, and avoid shiny fabrics or graphic shirts. Bright colors can look pretty and “pop” depending on the background and where your session is. If you aren’t sure what color scheme to use, check out Design Seeds’s website. For those who have booked a maternity session, all colors can work great. Personally, I love lighter pastel colors for expectant mothers. Light blues, light purples, blush pinks  and soft blues are always great to emphasize the natural glow of an expectant mother. And if you are comfortable emphasizing your belly, aim for tighter clothing, that way you can show off your beautiful baby!

2. Pull from one focal piece:

If you have a color palette in mind, shop around to find one patterned piece that you love. It can be a plaid shirt or floral dress, but if you find one central piece, it helps to plan everything around that. I always tell clients, pull colors from that one piece (shirt, dress, scarf, etc).

3. Layer it up!

Cardigans, necklaces, headband, scarf, button up shirt, tights, hats, ties. Layers & accessories add dimension, fun, texture and therefore richness to the overall look. They can even double as props for a session (see below)!

4.Split it up!

One important rule of thumb is to split up your colors! If you have six people in your family, and have selected three main colors, you don’t want all of those colors on top, you will want to split them up. You do this with shoes, skirts, and pants. For example: Fun and colorful skinny jeans are always great to split up the colors!

And some final tips:

  • Lay it on the floor and PLAN AHEAD!
  • Once you have gathered items in the colors you have picked, I would try to find a spot in your home that you can keep it all out. I’d suggest laying the pieces on the floor, and look at it from a far, take a picture of it. If you want advice on the final outfits you picked, i’m always open to helping you!
  • Make sure you start this planning when you book your session. Be thinking of it, look around in your home/closets, shop well in advance so you aren’t stressing at the last minute. I can’t emphasize this enough!
